Why does everyone want to go to their villages to celebrate the festival?

Sankranthi, also known as Makara Sankranthi, is one of the most widely celebrated harvest festivals in India. It marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara). It signifies the end of winter and the beginning of longer days, a time to celebrate nature’s bounty and thank the Sun God for agricultural prosperity.

Sankranthi has its roots in Vedic traditions, linked to the solar calendar and agricultural cycles. It is mentioned in ancient scriptures as a time for charity, purification, and thanksgiving.

Customs associated with Sankranthi:

-Bhogi Bonfires: Symbolizing the removal of negativity.

-Sun Worship: Offering prayers to the Sun God for blessings.

-Cattle Worship: Acknowledging the role of livestock in agriculture.

-Kite Flying: Symbolising freedom and joy.

The most authentic celebration of Sankranthi takes place in villages. These rural settings embody the spirit of the harvest festival, offering a unique and immersive experience that draws people back to their ancestral homes year after year.

In the villages, the Sankranthi spirit really comes alive, with age-old customs and traditions. Cattle worship, Bhogi bonfires, and community feasts are held in their purest forms and take people back to their roots of culture. Celebrating in villages is not about just rituals; it's a way of life respecting and celebrating the bounty of nature.
For many, Sankranthi in the village is an opportunity to reunite with family and the larger community. The festival fosters togetherness, as families gather in ancestral homes, and entire villages celebrate as one. Traditional games, folk dances, and shared feasts bring everyone closer, creating memories that last a lifetime. Elders pass down stories, rituals, and recipes, ensuring the continuity of these cherished traditions.

The celebration becomes the more special as it gets accompanied by closeness to nature, especially in the villages. All farming livestock are adorned and prayed to with decorations and good wishes.

The food takes center stage in the celebrations.Dishes such as sweet Pongal, ariselu, and tilgul laddoos are prepared with freshly harvested ingredients and traditional methods, which give an authentic flavor to the feasts of festivals.

Sankranthi in the village is a great break from the fast-paced city life. The relaxed pace, clean air, and open spaces in the villages offer a refreshing change that allows people to reconnect with their roots. Villages evoke nostalgia, reminding people of childhood memories—flying kites, playing traditional games, and watching elders perform rituals.

In villages, Sankranthi is much more than a celebration-it's a symbol of unity and equality. It brings people from all walks of life to the festivities, cutting across all lines of social or economic standing. Common resources, joint feasts, and all-inclusive rituals emphasize the sense of collective community often absent in city celebrations.

Sankranthi and villages are all about authenticity, simplicity, and community. It relates people to their background, the relatives, and everything around them. This is the reason so many want to go back to their villages during this auspicious festival.
