What is the role of festivals like Sankranthi in promoting unity and harmony in society?

Introduction:

Festivals are an important part of our culture, and they are celebrated all around the world. One such festival is Sankranthi, which is celebrated in many parts of India. Sankranthi is a time of joy, where people celebrate the harvest season, spend time with family, and enjoy various fun activities like flying kites. But did you know that festivals like Sankranthi also help bring people together and make society stronger? In this blog, we’ll talk about how Sankranthi plays a role in promoting unity and harmony among people.

1. Festivals Help Us Connect with Others
Festivals like Sankranthi are not just about celebrating with your family; they’re about celebrating with everyone around you. Whether you’re from a big city or a small village, Sankranthi is a time when everyone, no matter where they come from, comes together. People from different backgrounds, religions, and communities join in the fun by flying kites, enjoying sweets, and dancing. This helps us connect with people we may not usually talk to, and brings everyone closer.

2. Festivals Teach Us About Respecting Different Cultures
Sankranthi is celebrated in many different ways in various parts of India. In Tamil Nadu, it’s called Pongal, while in Gujarat it’s known as Makar Sankranti. Even though the celebrations are different, the spirit of happiness and togetherness is the same everywhere. By learning about how different people celebrate the same festival in different ways, we learn to respect other cultures. This makes us appreciate diversity and helps in creating a society that is more accepting and kind.

3. A Time for Goodwill and Kindness
One of the best parts of Sankranthi is the tradition of exchanging sweets like tilgul (sesame and jaggery). When people give each other sweets, they say, “Tilgul ghya, god god bola,” which means "Accept this sweet and speak only good things." This simple act of sharing helps spread kindness and positivity. When everyone is kind to each other, it makes our communities stronger and more peaceful.

4. Festivals Bring People Together
Sankranthi is also a great time for people to come together as a community. In many places, you’ll see people celebrating with large groups, flying kites together, and even having bonfires. People forget about their differences and come together to have fun and enjoy the festival. This helps build a sense of belonging and friendship between people who might not know each other well.

5. It’s a Special Time for Families
Sankranthi is a festival where families spend a lot of time together. Parents, grandparents, children, and even neighbors come together to celebrate. It’s a time for family traditions—whether it’s preparing a special dish or taking part in local activities. These family moments help us build stronger bonds with the people we love, and they remind us of the importance of staying close to our families.

Conclusion:

Festivals like Sankranthi are more than just fun celebrations. They play an important role in making our society more united and peaceful. By bringing people together from different backgrounds, teaching us to respect each other’s cultures, and spreading kindness, festivals help create a sense of harmony in our communities. So, the next time you celebrate Sankranthi, remember that it’s not just about kites and sweets—it’s about building a stronger, more united world where everyone feels connected and appreciated.
