THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON RELATIONSHIPS

Relationship – “the only vein that provides connection between the hearts of two persons”. And Social Media– “is the air that flows through the vein”. As the air contains Oxygen, which makes the heart beat and Carbon-dioxide, which stops the heart- beat.  Likewise, social media has both positive and negative impact on relationships.

On the positive edge social media is such a great tool for long distance relationship and also to get connect with new and like-minded people across the world. Some of the social media platforms are Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, WhatsApp, so on….. Slowly it has become one of the essential component in one’s life to be a part of these platforms.
In this vast world with billions of people, we can share our lives, exchange messages, and can even video chat with just a single tap. It acts as a bridge that connects people from any corner of the world. Social media platforms have made it easier to stay connected with our loved ones regardless of distance.

As we discussed the positive impact of social media on relationships, it have the negative impact also. These days snap streaks have become proof of friendship. The more streaks we maintain the stronger is the relationship. This is not the way to build our relationships stronger. Many of us love to post the pictures with our loved person on social media. But once you go back and try to recollect the memories behind the pictures you took together, there is nothing left but just the number of likes and comments….. The more involved we are online, the less involved we could become in our daily lives- and this includes the time we invest into our closest relationship.

Social media can be a ultimate platform for comparison, leading to jealousy and dissatisfaction within relationships. Seeing your partner interacting with others online and liking or commenting their posts can trigger feelings of jealousy and doubt which breaks your relationship. We may also end up in comparing our lives with others that puts comma to our love, happiness, and break our bond.

Snap a pic, choose a filter, capture a perfect photo, but behind this, emotions can easily be forgot. In this world full of likes and comments, let’s use social media to build each other up, but let’s never forget the power of hug. In a world of screens and endless scrolling, let’s still show love. Social media can enhance, but not replace, let’s put down our phones, and have face-to-face conversations where love truly grows. Use social media to spread love and light, to connect and inspire, to make each other’s lives bright but still don’t forget to have a balanced life.

Lastly, I would like to compare relationship to a thread because both require connection and continuity. Remember what you see on social media is not the full picture of someone’s life and make sure you do not break the thread because it takes time, effort, and care to mend the broken thread and repair the relationship. Don’t let social media be the third person in your relationship and give the first priority to real-life moments and make offline interactions and genuine connections. However, the impact of social media on relationships depends on how it is used and the balance we bring to our offline and online interactions.
